The Oxford University Biochemical Society (OUBS) is run by a committee of students of the university. The committee for the 2021/2022 academic year is:
President - Daniel Frey
Daniel is a Wellcome Trust DPhil student in the Newstead lab, employing structural biology to study interactions of proteins involved in intracellular protein trafficking. Moreover, he is interested in building upon structural insights using computational simulations to establish biochemical structure-function relationships. Apart from his academic endeavours, Daniel is also part of OUBS by serving as the society’s president.
Secretary - Anna Schwarzenbach
Anna is an MSc by Research student at the Department of Biochemistry, Foster Lab, where she is working on evolving potent toxin production via bacterial competition. As the OUBS Secretary, she organises the termly committee meetings and represents OUBS’ interests in the Departmental Strategy Group.
Treasurer - Anna Kogan
Anna is a DPhil student at the Department of Biochemistry, Jansen lab investigating how chromatin can be maintained in an active state while studying transcriptional memory in HeLa cells. At the OUBS, Anna acts as a treasurer, making sure that the finances stay in check, and also helps organize social events.
Talks Representative - Umut Gerlevik
Umut is a Marie Curie researcher and a DPhil student in the Mellor lab in the Department of Biochemistry, working on the relationships between chromatin higher-order structure, epigenetics, metabolism, and transcription. Umut serves as the talks representative for OUBS, helping to organize talks with distinguished scientists and professionals from around the world.
Social Secretary- Chloé Cassaro
Chloé is an Interdisciplinary Biosciences DTP student in the Uphoff lab, focussing on bacterial responses to stresses, and using cutting edge microscopy techniques. As a Social Secretary of OUBS, she plans social events to increase cohesion in a casual environment within the Biochemistry Department.
Senior Member - Prof. Elena Seiradake
Elena is a professor at the Department of Biochemistry. Her lab group focuses on studying the molecular mechanisms of protein receptors involved in the vascular and nervous systems. As the senior member of OUBS, Elena continually offers advice to committee members and has been involved with the organisation of speakers.
IT Officer - Zinuo Wu
Zinuo is an undergraduate student studying Biochemistry (Molecular and Cellular). As an IT officer of OUBS, Zinuo is responsible for maintaining and updating the OUBS website, as well as keeping the OUBS alumni LinkedIn group.
Event Officer - Priyadarshini Chatterjee
Priyadarshini is a DPhil student and a Skaggs-Oxford scholar in the Zitzmann lab investigating how the dengue virus affects cellular processes. As the events officer of OUBS, Priyadarshini organises both social and academic events at the Biochemistry department.
